Before you go out and buy a new computer, here are a few tips that might just fix the error. Logic gives you options from 32 samples all the way to samples. Setting this number to maximum means Logic will hold samples of audio data in buffer before sending it the CPU for processing. The downside is that latency will be increased, so a setting of samples is the recommended maximum for live recording.
If you record with a high buffer size, the resulting audio will likely be off with the rest of the mix. To avoid getting a system overload error during recording, you should use stock plugins. These stock plugins are usually built for efficiency, and use very little resources. Certain effects like reverbs and delays can be applied on a global level via auxiliary sends. Bounce them to audio , and disable the VST plugin.
RAM is a much faster kind of memory, and having enough of it is crucial for music production software. Depending on how quick your drive is, your computer might slow down to a crawl. SSDs have considerably higher bandwidth than their mechanical counterparts, enabling you to stream large sample libraries with less glitches and dropouts. In addition to upgrading your internal hard drive, also consider getting an external SSD for storing samples.
Spotlight enables you to search your Mac for files, but first it must index everything on your computer. Depending on how many files you have and your system configuration, this might take up to a few hours. Spotlight indexing uses a significant amount of CPU power, so you should just let it run before doing any work.
To find out if Spotlight is indexing just click on the magnifying glass in the left corner of your menu bar. If you see a status bar, Spotlight is in the re-indexing process. There have been a few times where updates to Logic or MainStage have caused a drop in performance. If you see a reoccurring issue that might affect you as well, hold off on the update. Use Stock Plugins While Recording If you record with a high buffer size, the resulting audio will likely be off with the rest of the mix.
Use Effects Sends Certain effects like reverbs and delays can be applied on a global level via auxiliary sends.

Jul 27, PM in response to swb In response to swb The question is : I never had this problem before when I was using Logic 9 even saving my projects in my internal HD and.
Two weeks ago the problem started still using Logic 9 , I thought probably was the Logic 9 and that was the reason I decided to updated to Logic X now I have Logic X and I have the same problem. Jul 27, PM. A week before logic X comes out it starts bugging out Im running 2. Aug 13, PM. Aug 13, PM in response to dandotcraig In response to dandotcraig.
Umm,, no offence LP9 was working fine and then stopped working normally according to you. Therefore what changed at the time LP9 stopped working normally? If you did, did you then restore from a backup you made prior to these problems occuring and what happened when you did so?
Did you start recording or creating music in a different way to how you used to before the problem started? Have you started using a different SI or FX plugin or plugins.. More or different FX for example.. Did you install a new version of a plugin? Is all your software legal? Have to ask because some people install all kinds of illegal plugins and whatever else.. Have you looked at the System logs to see if anything is happening out of the ordinary when you get these messages?
Have you looked at OS X’s Activity monitor to see if any app or routine is kicking in hard when you get this issue? Basically, you need to think about and look for what changed I believe i solved my problem Logic only runs in 64bit I probley changed it around the same time i started getting problems because some plugs run better in 32 over 64 in maschine.
I might start checking all the other plugs to see if I can make this change. Iv never really taken much notice of my CPU usage Im guessing this is normal? Also any advise on harddrive setup I’ve done this for years btw. Yes, format your external drive with journaling off. The option IS available in disk utility all you have to do is hold down one of the modifier keys for it to appear in the menu.
I forget. I think it’s as much the operating system as much as anything else, did you notice the “Disk too Slow or Overload” message not too long after upgrading to I do realize the “disk too slow, overload” problem has been around, well It can mean so many things, It can be an overload of the internal bus system so that a tiny bit of data doesn’t make it where it’s supposed to on time.
Often it’s plugins like Space Designer that tie up the bus, not only does it take a lot of cpu to do the convolution math it has to pass the data through as well. Journaling only manages disk integrity with files under 20Mb, if something happens to the audio drive chances are journaling won’t be able to do much, if anything.
Journaling is mainly used on servers where track of many small files some of them open needs the added integrity. I’ve never used journaling never seen any problems, the drives don’t work as hard. Aug 14, AM. The internal drive is then backed up to the Time Machine drive I guess you can never have too much back up! Before I do that please confirm that, if I do that, then subsequently want to revert for some reason, I can by simply selecting Enable Journaling.

Try these steps in order After trying each step below, test Logic Pro again to see if you’ve fixed your issue. Unplug your external audio interface from your Mac. Open and play back a project that’s been experiencing issues.
When working on a Logic Pro project with a lot of audio tracks, software instruments, or plug-ins, a system overload alert might appear that interrupts playback or recording. System overloads can occur when your Mac doesn’t have enough processing power to play back or record audio. Use the techniques in this article to avoid system overloads. Each CPU core in your Mac has its own meter.
On Mac computers with processors that support Hyper-Threading, two meters are shown for each core. Watch the meters as the project plays back, noting when the meters are full. When a meter is full, the CPU or the disk has reached the limit of its processing capability.
System overload alerts can appear when any of these meters peak. You can use this information to make adjustments to your project or your system configuration. If you’re recording audio and not software instruments, you can monitor your audio directly from the source. If your project doesn’t include automation, or the automation doesn’t need to be sample accurate, you can reduce the CPU load by turning off Sample Accurate Automation.
If your project does include automation, choose the option that includes only the parameters you’re automating. Projects with higher sample rates create larger audio files, which can increase the load on the CPU and disk. Plug-ins also require more CPU power to process audio files at higher sample rates.
When choosing the sample rate for your project, balance the considerations of audio quality, the anticipated format of the final product, and the performance of your Mac. If disk activity is causing system overload alerts, try choosing lower sample rates for your projects. When using CPU-intensive effect plug-ins such as reverbs and delays, you can reduce the load on the CPU by using send effects. Send effects let you use a single plug-in to process signals from multiple channels.
Avoid inserting effect plug-ins on individual tracks in a project. You can also optimize Alchemy for improved performance. Configure your system Follow these guidelines when configuring your system for use with Logic Pro: Quit other apps when using Logic Pro.
Make sure your Mac has the maximum amount of RAM, especially if your projects usually include many plug-ins or multiple instances of the EXS24 sampler. Save projects with high track counts to a dedicated storage device such as an external USB-C hard drive or an external solid-state drive SSD instead of saving projects to the system drive of your Mac.
Learn more about which file system is best for you. Choose any other additional options to streamline your workflow. Choose Custom from the pop-up menu in the LCD section. Double-click the CPU meter to open it in a new, expanded window. Process Buffer Range: Set this option to Large. If you are using ReWire, set this option to Playback Mode. Learn more about setting the Multithreading preference to optimize performance.
Set automation preferences If your project doesn’t include automation, or the automation doesn’t need to be sample accurate, you can reduce the CPU load by turning off Sample Accurate Automation. From the Sample Accurate Automation pop-up menu, choose Off. Choose the best sample rate for your project Projects with higher sample rates create larger audio files, which can increase the load on the CPU and disk.
Use send effects When using CPU-intensive effect plug-ins such as reverbs and delays, you can reduce the load on the CPU by using send effects. Optimize software instruments Use these guidelines when working with software instruments: When mixing, make sure to select an Audio track or an External MIDI track, not a Software Instrument track.
Select a Software Instrument track only when you’re actively working on it. If your project includes Track Stacks, make sure no Software Instrument sub-tracks are selected. Freeze tracks , especially tracks with a lot of plug-ins. Freezing Software Instrument tracks can increase the load on the disk, increasing the likelihood of encountering a system overload alert. Set the number of voices used in a software instrument to the lowest number required.
For example, if you have a Sculpture track that plays only two simultaneous notes, you could set that instance of Sculpture to use two voices. Disk Drive Speed: If you have a solid-state drive or a rpm or faster hard drive for your audio samples, choose Fast.
If you are using a rpm drive for your audio samples, choose Medium. If your projects include a lot of audio tracks, select Average or Extensive. Optimize Alchemy You can also optimize Alchemy for improved performance. You can create a new project and test to check if the issue is with your project or Logic Pro app.
Create another user account on your Mac , then try to recreate the issue in the new user account. If the issue doesn’t occur in the new user account, settings or files in the original account might be causing the issue.
However, you do lose any custom preference settings that you might have made. After resetting preferences, open your project and try to reproduce the issue that you were experiencing.
If the issue no longer occurs, open Logic Pro preferences and reapply your custom preference settings. After deleting preferences, open your project and try to reproduce the issue that you were experiencing. Delete Logic Pro , then redownload and reinstall it. Libraries won’t be affected. If you’re restoring Logic Pro from a backup, you can either drag it from its storage location to your Applications folder, or you can restore it from a Time Machine backup.

Try these steps in order After trying each step below, test Logic Pro again to see if you’ve fixed your issue.
Unplug your external audio interface from your Mac. Open and play back a project that’s been experiencing issues. Open Logic Pro without audio input and output Open Logic Pro and immediately press and hold the Control key before a project opens.
Test with a new project You can create a new project and test to check if the issue is with your project or Logic Pro app. If Logic Pro is open, quit the app. Open Logic Pro and create a new empty project. Add Apple Loops to the new project. Try to recreate the issue you were having. For example, if the project you’re having an issue with uses a particular third-party plug-in, add it to the test project. If the problem reappears, the plug-in might be damaged or might need to be updated.
Test Logic Pro with a new user account Create another user account on your Mac , then try to recreate the issue in the new user account. Quit Logic Pro. Remove the “com. If you upgraded from Logic 9 or earlier to Logic Pro, also remove the “com.
Restart your Mac. Libraries won’t be affected If you’re restoring Logic Pro from a backup, you can either drag it from its storage location to your Applications folder, or you can restore it from a Time Machine backup.

Hi Chris and thank you for helping the music community with all your valuable lessons. I read the article but I still have the problem. Running Logic X pro Can you please give me some suggestions? Thanks for all your help. Trun off all plugins and freeze all audiotracks.
When arranging use a lighter option in mono if possible. When the arrangement is complete, switch to the software instrument you want to use in mono or stereo. One midi track at a time with the heaviest plugin first. Probably the drums or other instruments with multitrack option. Freeze all audio tracks and make necessary changes. Use the same buffer and range as your other reckordings in the project or as far down as possible.
Mute and hide all audio tracks. Soloing your software instrument. Bounce in place. Continue with the same procedure for other instruments. Freeze, mute and hide your new track. If multitracks with drums. Find out how to bounce one drum at the time. Most simple to use the solo option in the software. Adjustment of drums in audio is simple as adjustments in midi with LPX.
When you have only audio tracks, adjust the buffer and range. Unfreeze all audio tracks and turn on plugins. Then freeze them all again. Also to make sure everything lives in the same buffer and range. Unfreeze only the tracks you are working on. Hope this work for you. It works very smooth on my Mac mini Great list! But two seconds in, Logic just craps out. System overload. You hit play again, this time no Beachball of Doom. Just straight to — System overload. And now you want to put your fist through your Mac.
But Wait! And the bigger the audio files? The more resources Logic needs to run your projects. Often engineers use 48k. Instead, make sure to set the Sample Rate before you start. Set your projects to Taking it even a step further, quit any applications that are running in the Task Bar: As you can see, I have 6 applications running in the background. To remove an input, simply click on the input field of an audio track and select No Input : 5. More priority equals more Mac resources.
That way you can enjoy the awesome reverb across your project without the crushing load. Freeze Tracks Freezing tracks is the opposite of Bouncing in Place. This allows Logic to reduce the CPU load.
Written by Apple. Logic Pro includes a massive collection of instruments, effects, loops and samples, providing a complete toolkit to create amazing-sounding music. What does Logic Pro do? Logic Pro is the most advanced version of Logic ever. If you want to download the software on your windows pc or mac, you could either first visit the Mac store or Microsoft AppStore and search for the app OR you can easily use any of the download links we provided above under the “Download and Install” header section to download the application.
Our download links are from safe sources and are frequently virus scanned to protect you. Unlike all Logic versions before 9, there is no option to manually show the EXS where to look for the samples.
If you are lucky enough to have the original old hard drive you created the samples on, and you are able to somehow connect it to your Mac – it will work. But copy the folder of samples to your new drive s and it stops working.
And that vocal line sounds fresh as hell. Bouncing in Place creates a new audio file with your plugins and processing printed to the region.
Freezing is actually a form of bouncing in place. Logic bounces the track, and any plugins you may have in use are now unavailable to use. But say you decide later that you do need to tweak a setting. When you Freeze your tracks, you can simply turn Freeze off, and tweak your settings. When you Bounce in Place, you have to go back to the original track and then bounce again with your new settings. Freezing is easy. Click the snowflake icon and hit play.
Logic will do its thing, and you should have more CPU for your project. Your Mac is running your OS, Logic, and a slew of other functions. Tossing audio and virtual instruments onto the pile is a lot.
By saving your projects to an external hard drive, you reduce the workload for your Mac. Now your external hard drive is handling the load for:. But they also come at a great cost. Just make sure it runs at RPM. Remember all the talk before about the Buffer? It can be a little tough. And some Macs are limited about how much memory they can use.
I would check out Other World Computing for info on changing out your memory. Logic is fantastic. But all the goodies do come at a price. This is great! I decided to take a break and check my email and here is this tutorial, fresh out of the oven. Its like you read my mind! Will definitely be using these to fix up my issues!!! Great and useful tips! I knew some of these roles already, but not all ones. Thamk you! Thank you so much!
I just got a MacBook and started using Logic and not even a week in and I got that darn overload message. However, these tips are so great and everything is okay now and my anxiety is gone. You really saved the day. Great resource and great solutions. Now, between latency and just lag in general, it slows down the creative process. Hey Rob, happy to help! Thank you, great info and very well written. Only problem is I still have a the problem.
Or should one delete all plugins on the unused track after bouncing? Is my machine dying or is 96 k that much harder for it? What might need to be upgraded in my machine to make this work better? Ram, cpu? Any advice would be highly appreciated for I have found very little on this specific problem after days of searching. Everything is about virtual instruments and I have none in my session. Hi Michael, thanks so much for your comment! The number 1 recommendation I can offer is that a Sample Rate of 96k is overkill for most applications.
It can crush your CPU usage. Most audio professionals work at Muting your tracks will not offload plugin processing. But since the release of A safer bet would be to use Flex In Slicing Mode.
If you arrange software instruments before all audio recordings, it is perfectly fine to start in Reduce the CPU usage by freezing, bouncing, using shared effects sends, reducing the polyphony on instruments etc.
Or buy a faster computer. What are the plugin instruments that you are still using? I think that may solve your problem. As i mentioned, i am freezing the majority of my track and bouncing down everything i can, i physically cant bounde down much more before it makes it virtually impossible to work on Any other options?
You are basically at the limitations of your CPU power here. Perhaps you can replace some plugins with less CPU heavy versions or share effects more using sends etc. It can also mean a third-party Audio Units plug-in might be damaged, or it might not be compatible with your version of Logic Pro.

You are basically at the limitations of your CPU power here. Perhaps you can replace some plugins with less CPU heavy versions or share effects more using sends etc. Maybe you could work with stems eg. However, it does have on issue now with Flex Pitch and Flex Tim. Total disaster when only trying to use Flex Pitch and not edit the time.
When you turn off Flex and Follow, all of your time and pitch corrections disappear. I just want to use flex. Nothing can fix this. I have been looking in Apple Forums and trying to find a solution for about a week now.
The artifacts that now happen when using flex are so bad the audio almost becomes unusable.
The other name for Journaling is Indexing. Slightly different because of the OS involved but same basic function. Aug 14, PM in response to dandotcraig In response to dandotcraig.
