Windows 10 tamper protection reddit free download

Was this reply helpful? Yes No. Sorry this didn’t help. Thanks for your feedback. Although not having same issue myself on any of my Win 10 machines I know there were issues with the Tamper Protection being turned off after build upgrades for Windows insiders testing that should have been resolved when was released. Tamper Protection was introduced a year ago and though I don’t recall if there ever was a cause for the issue reported.
Subsequent Windows Insider blogs regarding new builds indicated this was a bug known issue. Unfortunately some version upgrades come complete with bugs but when it comes to security no such bugs should exist. Then again if you consider that you, as an end user, can turn this feature on and off it’s likely that the miscreants of malware can do the same if real-time protection has been bypassed, doesn’t really matter which security software you use.

In reply to DaveM’s post on November 19, Hey, any luck? Hi Lumina Sorry, I was offline. The minidump file did not indicate any specific problem or device driver, it was very generic.
In reply to DaveM’s post on November 21, Hi Dave, Thanks very much. Also, any idea why tamper protection would be turning off? Hi Lumina Is that just turning itself off, if so honestly with all those WIndows 10 updates, that would be hard to diagnose, most likely that will settle down with a future update.
Hi Dave, Yeah its just turning off by itself randomly. In reply to LuminaGajanayake’s post on November 21, Same here; I find that it is turned off randomly. This morning it was off again. In reply to EdGregor’s post on December 20, It’s a never ending challenge to keep one step ahead.

Tamper protection is available for devices that are running one of the following versions of Windows:. During some kinds of cyber attacks, bad actors try to disable security features, such as anti-virus protection, on your machines. Bad actors like to disable your security features to get easier access to your data, to install malware, or to otherwise exploit your data, identity, and devices.
Tamper protection helps prevent these kinds of things from occurring. Tamper protection essentially locks Microsoft Defender Antivirus to its secure, default values, and prevents your security settings from being changed through apps and methods such as:. Tamper protection doesn’t prevent you from viewing your security settings. And, tamper protection doesn’t affect how third-party antivirus apps register with the Windows Security app. If your organization is using Windows 10 Enterprise E5, individual users can’t change the tamper protection setting; in those cases, tamper protection is managed by your security team.

Here are a few points to keep in mind:. Currently, the option to manage tamper protection in the Microsoft Defender Security Center is on by default for new deployments. For existing deployments, tamper protection is available on an opt-in basis, with plans to make opting in the default method in the near future. When you use the Microsoft Defender Security Center to manage tamper protection, you do not have to use either Intune or the tenant attach method.
When you manage tamper protection in the Microsoft Defender Security Center, the setting is applied tenant wide, affecting all of your devices that are running Windows 10, Windows Server , or Windows Server To fine-tune tamper protection such as having tamper protection on for some devices but off for others , use either Intune or Configuration Manager with tenant attach.
If you have a hybrid environment, tamper protection settings configured in Intune take precedence over settings configured in the Microsoft Defender Security Center. You must have appropriate permissions , such as global admin, security admin, or security operations. Your devices must be onboarded to Microsoft Defender for Endpoint. Your devices must be using anti-malware platform version 4. Manage Microsoft Defender Antivirus updates and apply baselines.
Cloud-delivered protection must be turned on. Use Intune when you want to fine-tune tamper protection settings. For example, if you want to enable tamper protection on some devices, but not all, use Intune. Your organization uses Intune to manage devices. Intune licenses are required; Intune is included in Microsoft E5.

Is Windows Defender enough anti-virus protection if I am careful about the sources of and what I am downloading? I stay off of naughty sites and all I really do on this machine is some video encoding, emails, web browsing and listening to music.
I was using Kaspersky IS previously and although it is a great program, my CC company keeps blocking my renewal so I decided to just try free and then I thought, do I really need that much AV protection? I have used Norton before and hated it because it eats up all my RAM.
I use and recommend Windows Defender over all third party solutions. Be aware AV-Test linked by easytechguides , is often criticised by security professionals and enthusiasts as being too lax in their testing. If you look at the test scores, you can see this. Nearly everything gets 5.
That doesn’t tell you much. Sure, it might be closer to the “real world” where you don’t execute multiple programs and have multiple payloads being delivered, but it doesn’t do much to differentiate between the different security suites. While Windows Defender managed to put up similar numbers to vendors like Bitdefender or Kaspersky, they have had consistently higher false positives and more importantly, the performance test showed that Windows Defender is also the most inefficient out of all of them.
It uses more system resources to provide the same sometimes less protection. Think about that for a moment. I’d also suggest looking at this YouTube channel. He does work for Emsisoft, but his channel and opinions are his own and not endorsed by anyone. His videos do a reasonable job of showing what would actually happen should you let your guard down one day and accidentally end up with malware or PuPs on your system.
Make sure to pay attention to the video dates. How an AV performed several months ago is not as relevant as a more recent video on the same product. I’m not trying to say Windows Defender is worse or better. I’m trying to point you to some resources so YOU can decide what is best for yourself. I’d highly encourage you to do research with reputable sources and make your own decision, rather than being a sheep and preaching Windows Defender for every use case with zero actual knowledge i.
I was criticising AV-Test and how some say their tests are too easy. The bit about preaching Windows Defender was about people in general who pretend to know more than they actually do blindly suggesting it for absolutely every situation. Just beware it has some issues with false positives and a couple of common bugs that cause it to sit in the background eating resources.
I stay with Windows Defender from 7 SP1, seen it growing from thin bunch of scripts to a good antivirus.
I recommend to use Windows Defender instead of 3rd party solution, unless you have a paid license of it. If you have Windows 10, then yes Defender is an excellent AV.

Which is in keeping with a Forbes article in any case, since you have to read all the way to the very bottom to find the two corrections at the authors were forced to make about this ‘M’ claim. It’s certainly no surprise that malware tries to disable Windows Defender.
If you think about it, this should reassure you if you are using Windows Defender. This particular one is mitigated by having Windows Tamper Protection enabled. Windows Security will post a warning if this feature is not turned on so it should be pretty straightforward for most people to ensure they are protected. Huh, I feel like the headline is misleading.
What do you use? I use Malwarebytes Premium in real time and Avast free. One detects things the other does not. Defender is terrible at real time online detection. Ah I see. Good luck. The danger with it is online Trojans injected on certain web pages you may travel.
Defender is terrible with those. Out of curiosity, Defender is updated daily. What sites are you browsing daily and where are the files downloaded from to be worried about 0day trojans? You never know until you get there. A lot of sales sites try to leave trackers on your machines. Both mine are updated daily too. All AV programs are.
I also use Malwarebytes Premium as an extra layer of protection along with Windows Defender. They seem to play well together.
However, I’ve seen no evidence that today’s Windows Defender “is terrible at real time online detection”. A statement like that begs for some kind of evidence.
Just disable defender, Mbam Premium is more than enough and there wont be a single thing defender detects that mbam doesn’t. Windows Defender is surprisingly resource heavy when compared to many other anti-viruses so if you don’t need it it’s better to disable it. This is exactly what I do myself, I’ve disabled defender using group policy and just run mbam premium. Thanks for the tip, but I’ll stick with both until I see some extensive testing. Also, Defender feels surprisingly light to me after running McAfee and Norton for many years.
But i prefer to err on the side of security anyway as long as it’s not noticeably bogging things down. Remember to check historic results too. There can be pretty wild swings in the results from month to month.
I build and fix computers for a living and have tested both extensively. Defender has never detected any online threats and MB gets them every time and blocks the site. What was the approximate time-frame for your testing and a couple of specific threats that Defender didn’t detect? I did a bunch of AVs for about a week going to the same sites. Defender blocked none of them. MB caught them every time. Edit: I’m guessing you downvoted my response which doesn’t matter, but to make it even more clear for you: Even though I asked for specifics, you still didn’t provide any specific sites that Defender supposedly failed to block or what year you did the tests.
Also, since you’re talking about websites, you don’t even mention which browser, if it was Edge with SmartScreen enabled, etc.
No person who is reasonably savvy with computers and life in general is going to just take your word for it with virtually no significant details.

What stops the virus from disabling “tamper protection” and then stopping Windows Defender? It probably uses the now by default integrated virtualization based security to isolate Defender’s processes.
I admittedly haven’t kept track of consumer PCs that closely in the past couple of years outside of Surfaces, but are we talking about computers purchased in the past five years? Some PCs can’t run the current build of Windows 10 due to processor incompatibility, but those were mostly cheap PCs or tablets. I could be wrong but feel it’s similar with Hyper-V. You’re pretty much correct in your assumptions. If my memory serves me correctly then Intel has had support for ages on pretty much all hardware.
AMD was a bit late to the party but even they have been producing them for over a decade now. Then it will basically undo the changes the third party app did. IE did something like this for homepage protection, to make sure that the user actually wanted to change the home page and it wasn’t some random app thinking that your homepage should be their favorite website.
Seems like quite the positive move to me. I’ll give fair props when they’re deserved, I’m not made of stone. The question of is asking what’s stopping malware from also turning off Anti-Tamper. That question makes no sense, as Anti-Tamper can’t be turned OFF in the background else it would defeat it’s purpose. The question is asking why it is not possible for malware with admin privileges to not to turn off a software-level toggle.
Good question, but if it actually works it seems to be a pretty good feature and im okay with having it enabled by default to protect less tech savy users.
Seems a good security feature. Do you know if this feature will be only added for the public upcoming update or will be added for prior versions such as v too?
It seems only available for public version. I’m on latest build and the feature isn’t present Get their standalone upgrade dealie, if it’s not showing up on Windows Update. I already know it mate. I’m on v intentionally. I was on v for a while but recently I decided to roll-back to v clean install due to specific and enthusiastic gaming reseasons and purposes ie.
However, I know, this has downsides like these, sucha as are, for example, the support for new OS features, and the lack of MS OS support and of regular security updates in the long term. Still MORE layers of “security” between the user and full local control over the system? Windows is designed for the less tech-savvy person, and as such needs to include features to protect people from themselves.
I have… I still use Windows because work basically forces that, but on my own computer I only run windows inside VMs that let me have control by controlling the box it runs inside of and its access to the outside world.
I don’t dispute that there are users who need to be protected from themselves, but I do feel that Windows should have retained a Windows Ultimate like sku that gave private users Enterprise like local control. You switched on an extremely aggresive protection that prevents nearly all programs from altering user data and OS did exactly that.
In most cases it isn’t but creation of new files isn’t blocked by controlled access feature. Overwriting existing files, on the other hand, is – because that’s how ransomware works. This probably triggered the protection. Use of this site constitutes acceptance of our User Agreement and Privacy Policy.

If you want control over a system, nothing beats Arch, honestly. Whitelisting is expected if you use deny-first policy. It’s designed to be paranoid. Manual control of a setting is local control.

It’s designed to be paranoid. Windows Defender only defends Edge Browser with smart screen With configuredefender there probably about the same in terms of protection but Kaspersky is lighter whereas WD has more security layers.
It’s no longer the ‘just change a registry value’ bad that used to plague WD and took MS the better part of a decade to resolve , it actually takes a little effort now, but I do mean ‘a little’. They wouldn’t even have to develop something themselves, just use a script to silently run Defender Control , unzip a password protected. Defender has this in the form of Tamper Protection, but as shown in the link above this is relatively easily bypassed, even by legitimate applications.

Nearly everything gets 5. That doesn’t tell you much.
Sure, it might be closer to the “real world” where you don’t execute multiple programs and have multiple payloads being delivered, but it doesn’t do much to differentiate between the different security suites.
